Safety

An important consideration for all cruisers is that of safety. Barrocka has many integral features which have been contemplated at the design stage to improve overall safety, especially in ocean passages.

The original design brief for the Waterline 1480 was for a vessel that could get the owner home in 30knts on the nose, safely and quickly, without to much drama. In order to do this Jeff Schionning designed very long hulls for the accommodation size of the yacht, pushing buoyancy to the bow and stern without any attendant weight. The result is a boat that will amaze in its ability to avoid ‘taking-a-wave' when things get rough, especially in a large following sea.

The vessel has 28 sealed buoyancy chambers including a horizontal crash bulkhead in the bows, below the cockpit, in the engine rooms, and below the transom steps. The bottom of each hull has a series of sealed chambers beneath the cabin sole effectively giving her a second hull. The first 550mm of each bow is solid construction foam.

The dagger boards are designed with a sacrificial bottom section for when they strike an object, rather than damaging the integrity of the daggerboard cases and the hull.

Kick-up Rudder System
Kick-up Rudder System
The rudders are housed in cassettes that kick-up on a break-away system if they strike an object. This has saved the loss of a rudder three times in 20,000 Nm.

The engines retract up into the engine rooms when sailing so there are no sail-drives or shafts to be damaged or caught in fish trap ropes ect.

As mentioned previously all lines are lead to the cockpit so it is not necessary to leave the cockpit when on solo watch.

The parachute anchor bridle is lead back to the cockpit during passages using cable ties onto the lifeline stanchions. Should the crew need to deploy the parachute anchor, it can be simply shackled to the rode and thrown over the windward rail. Extra strong bridle attachment points were built into the ends of the fore beam during building using unidirectional glass and gun rovings. All joints in the parachute system are metal to metal to avoid chafe.

Flat strap Jack Lines and attachment points are built in and allow access to all parts of the boat while connected to a harness.

Performance is not just fun, it is a big safety factor for an ocean going yacht. On passages Barrocka will often complete the journey in half the time of a monohull yacht, avoiding unpredictable weather and comfortably reaching safe harbour within the predicted weather window. On coastal trips she will put the anchor down with plenty of light to spare, once again adding to the safety and comfort of the crew. She will often cover distances in daylight, which others must sail overnight to achieve.
