Outboard Power

For those of us who are new to outboard power on a cruising multihull, please consider the following advantages…

Weight – Simplified, multihull performance is a ratio of power and weight. Barrocka's 50HP Honda four stroke outboards weigh 90Kg each, complete with propeller. A 50HP diesel sail drive unit weighs 240 Kgs dry, without the exhaust, water box, lubricants and a larger starting battery.

Hull Beam – Another factor in the performance equation is the hull length to beam ratio. Simply put, long thin hulls go faster than short beamy ones. Having less weight to support at the rear of the hull allows the designer to make the hull narrower, improving the waterline length to beam ratio and thus performance.

Low Drag – When sailing, the entire leg and propeller are raised inside the hull, reducing drag. There are no props, skegs, legs or shafts to become damaged by ropes, fish traps, logs and other floating objects, not to mention groundings. The vessel can be ‘dried out' on sand, without the leg having to support the weight of the vessel.

Interior Space – the use of outboards positioned behind the back beam of the yacht allows walk –in space in the rear cabins rather than ‘dive-in' bunks, with a noisy diesel underneath.

Economy – in calm conditions using only one engine, Barrocka will motor at 5 knots @ 2200 rpm and use 0.5 litres of fuel per nautical mile. This is eco-tourism. Her engines have just turned 1000 hrs in 5 years and 20,000 nautical miles of cruising (200 hrs per year). She requires so little wind to sail that engines are for getting on and off the anchor or in and out of harbour.

Simplicity – if an engine must be removed for any reason it can be achieved in thirty minutes using three tools and the boom to lift it out and onto the dock. It can be carried easily by two people and transported in the boot of a car.

Fuel - the fuel system is much simpler without the need for a return or header tank. The fuel does not suffer from microbial infection (Diesel Bug) or aeration problems in rough conditions.
